Join us on the first scheduled Mongaup – a 1 barrel whitewater release.
Eagle creek is having issues with both turbines.
Eagle Creek has assured us that Sunday, April 12ths scheduled one barrel release will happen as Eagle Creek will divert additional flow down the riverbed. On their Mongaup River / Rio Operation Forecast page Eagle Creek writes: “Discussion as of 04/10/2026.…The maintenance issue is continuing at Rio, so generation is offline. However, we will release water to spill at Rio dam on April 12 to support the scheduled whitewater release. “
Eagle Creek will be aiming for slightly more then a normal 1 barrel in order to assure that they have at least a 1 barrel. Flow is likely to fluctuate more then normal releases..
The plus for us is they are spilling water over the dam so we can paddle the upper section as well making it a 5 mile run. Be forewarned that wood is likely everywhere but especially on the upper (Dam to powerhouse).

Our tentative plan is to run from the dam down, which adds 2 miles of seldom run, slightly easier whitewater.
Rebecca, our contact with the dam operator, Eagle Creek, is planning on being at the put-in on Sunday to answer questions in person. (Thank her for the effort she is putting in on our behalf).
The issue effected both turbines and resulting in an oil release. Booms are in place and the Department of Environmental Conservation has been properly informed.

It’s a great chance to surf some waves, catch some eddies and knock off the winter rust. Water will still be quite cold. Check out the ice formations on the cliffs at river right after the first drop.
Dry gear, heavy wetsuits or skills and cautious paddling required. If you aren’t confident of your skills and gear wait a few weeks. By early to mid May the Mongaup and most area rivers will be warm enough for at least safe if not pleasant swimming.
